Trumpet (Shofar)

Objects & Symbols

The ram's-horn trumpet that summoned, warned, and announced — a sound tied to God's decisive acts.

The shofar was a trumpet made from a ram's horn, capable of a piercing blast that carried for miles. It was Israel's public address system: it gathered the assembly, sounded the alarm in war, announced the new moon and the feasts, and proclaimed the Year of Jubilee and its liberty.

Its blast accompanied God's great appearances and acts — the trumpet grew “exceeding loud” at Sinai, and the walls of Jericho fell after the priests' horns sounded. The Feast of Trumpets opened the solemn season of the year with its call to wake and assemble before God.

The New Testament carries the sound into the future: the Lord will descend “with the trump of God,” and the dead will be raised “at the last trump.” From Sinai to the final gathering, the trumpet marks the moments God breaks in — a summons that cannot be ignored.
