Rod & Staff
Objects & SymbolsThe shepherd’s and ruler’s wooden staff — tool of guidance and defence, sign of authority and miracle.
A rod or staff was the all-purpose implement of the shepherd and traveller: a stout stick to lean on, to guide and count the sheep, and to fend off predators. In the hand of a leader it became a sign of authority — a sceptre or symbol of office.
In Moses’ hand an ordinary shepherd’s rod became the instrument of God’s wonders: it turned to a serpent, struck the Nile, and was stretched over the Red Sea so the waters parted. The rod itself held no power; it was the visible token of the God who acted through it.
Most beloved is the shepherd’s comfort of Psalm 23: “thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” The same tools that disciplined and defended the flock reassured it of the shepherd’s presence. The rod and staff picture a God who both guides and guards — whose authority over us is finally a comfort, not a threat.
