Authorship unknown. Proposals include Apollos, Barnabas, Priscilla, or Paul (the latter now largely rejected).
Why Hebrews was written
Written to Jewish Christians tempted to abandon Christ and return to Judaism, showing that Jesus is superior to angels, Moses, Joshua, Aaron, and the Levitical priesthood — the once-for-all perfect sacrifice and great High Priest.
